Football Team Attends W. V. U.- V. M. I. Game

The coach, managers, and fourteen members of the ’56 football team attended the West Virginia University - Virginia Military Institute game on Nov. 10th at Morgantown, W. Va. This was the date of the Annual High School Day on which members of any of the football teams in the state were admitted free.

The team left Alderson at 6:30 Saturday morning in three cars driven by Coach McLaughlin, Coleman Highlander, and Jim Rowe. They arrived in Morgantown at 11:00 and split up into groups to eat.

The game got under way at 1:30 and proved to be very exciting despite the cold weather and biting wind. West Virginia won 13-6 in a much closer game than was expected.

The team left Morgantown at 4:00 and was treated to a dinner in Elkins. They arrived home at 10:00 that night.

Those going on the trip were: (Coach McLaughlin, Abe Strealy, Charles Ayers, David Shields, Paul Harrah, C. Sweetwood, Eddie Thompson, Jim Meadows, Dewey Eary, Eddie McCallister, Melvin Hunter, Henry Mann, Donald Harrah, Eddie Conner, Jackie Hunter, Brian Boyd, Andy Russell, and Alex McLaughlin.


Rupert Falls to Alderson

Rupert Crimson Tide fell to a strong Alderson team 32-6 in a bruising battle before a large Rupert Homecoming crowd.

The Alderson Indians gained the lead early in the first quarter after a long drive when Sweetwood drove across from two yards out and Shields gained the extra point, Rupert came right back with a drive that gained them six points. The Indians picked up one more touchdown late in the second quarter on a long pass to make the score 13-6 at the half.

In the second half the Indians came back with new life and held the Crimson Tide scoreless while picking up nineteen points.

Alderson Romps to Seventh Win Of Grid Season

The Alderson Indians picked up their seventh win of the season by thumping the Lewisburg Senators 47 to 14, and also extending the Senators losing streak to seven for this season.

David Shields was just about the entire show for the Indians. He picked up five of his team’s TDs to add to an enormous total of 147 points for the year. Shields did some fine running in pacing his team to victory, his first was 18, 13, 55, 53, and a 3 yard plunge to make it five touchdowns for the night.

In the opening quarter Paul Harrah got the Indians off and running with a 30 yard end around. His first of the season. Sweetwood added another to round out their scoring.

The Senators managed to score in the third and fourth quarters. They picked up seven first downs to the Indians 13.

Indians Chalk Up Eighth Victory

The Alderson Indians gained their eighth victory of the year in their last game by pasting the Hinton Bobcats 31-0 before a crowd of 2,000 fans.

Shields gained the first score for the Indians in the first quarter on a 12-yard run and then picked up the extra point. Shields added one more touchdown to his total in the second quarter on a 41-yard sprint.

Both teams came into the second half determined, but the Indians held down the running of Bobcat halfback, "Mule" Bennett, and picked up three more touchdowns. C. K. Sweetwood made the longest run of the game, a 73-yard end run in the third quarter. The other two touchdowns were picked up in the last quarter on passes from Shields, one a 25-yard pass-run to Sweetwood and a 20-yard pass to Meadows.


Indians Finish Season 8-1

Alderson Indians finished the regular season of football November 2 when they beat the Hinton Bobcats 31-0. This gave the Indians an eight wins, one loss record, the one loss coming at the hands of Meadow Bridge 20-19 in a close battle.

Six members of the ’56 team will graduate this year — Dewey Eary, left guard; Melvin Hunter, right guard, Jim Meadows, left end, Henry Mann, left tackle, Ed- die McCallister, center, co-captain and C. K. Sweetwood, fullback, co-captain.

DAVID SHIELDS NAMED ON ALL-STATE TEAM

David Shields, Alderson High School junior, has been named on the first eleven on the 1956 All-West Virginia Class “B" high school football team, according to a release from the All-State Football Board.
