Originally called the "Joint
County Bridge" when built in 1914, this bridge replaced an iron
bridge built in 1882 at the same location. The original stone piers
of the iron bridge are encased within the present concrete piers. In
1977, the West Virginia Department of Highways constructed a
replacement bridge downstream. The citizens of Alderson a recognized
the beauty and continued importance of the old bridge as a community
link and voted to have the Town of Alderson assume ownership. The
community then began its effort to preserve and restore this
historic and picturesque landmark that reaches across the Greenbrier
River to connect the Monroe and Greenbrier County portions of the
community.
A When designed and built under
the direction of prominent West Virginia bridge engineer Frank Duff
McEnteer and constructed by his firm, the Concrete Steel Bridge
Company, this bridge was the longest earth-filled reinforced
concrete arch bridge in West Virginia. The bridge was entered in the
National Register of Historic Places by the United States Department
of the Interior on December 4, 1991.
The Alderson Bridge Trust Fund
was founded in 1976 by interested community citizens to assist the
Town of Alderson with raising funds for maintenance and restoration
of the Alderson Memorial Bridge. Through the efforts of the Town and
the Bridge Trust Fund, major restoration of the walls and sidewalks
was accomplished in 2004-05. The next phase includes maintenance and
cosmetic repairs to the arches and other portions of the "below
deck" areas of the bridge to ensure its long—term stability. As the
Town and Bridge Trust Fund have been successful in obtaining
additional grant funding for some of this work but must obtain
matching funds in order to proceed, The Alderson Bridge Trust Fund
would deeply appreciate and ‘ earnestly solicit your contributions.
From 1977 through 2008, the
Trust Fund listed "Memorial" contributions annually in the Alderson
Fourth of July Celebration Brochure to recognize and honor the
individuals that have been memorialized. Additionally, a cumulative
list containing the names of all the memorial donations received
from 1976 to the current date, was published and grew to the point
that it required four or more pages of advertisement. Due to the
cost of such advertisements and the need to wisely utilize the
financial contributions generously given to sustain the bridge, the
Trustees , determined in 2009 that it was no longer feasible to
continue that practice. A instead, the Trust Fund will purchase
space in the Alderson Fourth of July Brochure to recognize and honor
the memorial and honorarium contributions received during the
preceding year only. The cumulative roster will be maintained and
updated annually and will be displayed at the Alumni Banquet and
other events during the fourth of July celebration.
The Alderson Bridge Trust Fund
sincerely appreciates your continued support of our community’s
picturesque landmark. Donations and memorial gifts of any amount are
always welcomed and encouraged so that the bridge can continue to be
repaired and maintained to ensure its survival for the enjoyment of
our citizens, visitors and for future generations. Gifts or
memorials may be made by mailing your check made payable to the
Alderson Bridge Trust Fund to Tammy Smith Skaggs, 605 West Maple
Avenue, Alderson, WV 24910, or by seeing one of the trustees. The
trustees of the Alderson Bridge Trust Fund are E. Sterling "Tod"
Hanger, Jr., Chairman; Tammy Skaggs, Treasurer; John Robert "Bob"
Holliday; Russell W. "Rusty" Hunter; and Richard C. "Dick" Simms.
