THE ENDING OF ALL HOPE

Alex McLaughlin - May 9, 2015

Enzo

Enzo is a spaniel mix that we initially fostered then kept for good. He had spent his pre shelter life going through garbage cans. Mary Jo said that he had got his name because she always wanted to name a dog Enzo. I knew better than to pursue the subject at that time. After either interrogation or patience I learned that she had named him after a dog named Enzo from a novel "The Art of Racing in the Rain".

As a youngster Enzo was a puppy prodigy. He could leap thorough the air with the greatest of ease. He would make long runs and jump it seemed like thirty feet onto the couch. I felt as proud as a parent who had a merit Scholar kid or a kid who had won an all expense athletic scholarship to college. The sky seemed the limit for this amazing jumping almost flying dog. But over time Enzo picked up a few pounds and started missing the couch on his flying leaps. I though maybe it was his technique or maybe he had suffered an injury that kept him from landing all the way on the couch.

I though maybe it was his technique or maybe he had suffered an injury that kept him from landing all the way on the couch. Last night I ended all hope when I picked him up and carried him up to bed. I could hardly carry him. It seemed that the once gravity defying marvel had doubled in weight. Now my hopes of greatness for Enzo are shattered and we are left with a plumb little normal wonderful friend and companion.
