THE BATTLE IN THE RIVER
Richard Hughes

JOHN JOHNSON AND RICHARD HUGHES ONCE GOT HOLD OF AN OLD CANOE UP AROUND SNOWFLAKE . OUR PLAN WAS TO GO DOWN THE GREENBRIER TO BELL POINT AT THE TIP WHERE THE GREENBRIER R  AND THE NEW  RIVER MERGE . MY COUSIN DICK GUNNOE  WAS GOING TO MEET  US KEEP THE CANOE AND DRIVE US BACK TO ALDERSON . WE STARTED SMOOTHLY IN THE RIVER , BUT THEN WE RAN INTO SOME ROUGH WATER, THE BOAT WAS BEING WHIPPED AROUND ,WE LOST CONTROL AND FLIPPED THAT BABY OVER I  WAS UNDER THE CANOE , I WAS SCARED UNDERWATER ,WITH A GREAT EFFORT I LIFTED THE BOAT UP WHERE MY NOSE GOT OUT OF THE WATER ,JOHN WAS OFF TO THE SIDE AND WE GOT THE BOAT TURNED OVER AND GOT BACK IN . OUR BEECHNUT CHEWING TOBACCO WAS RUINED , AND WE WERE SOAKED FROM HEAD TO FOOT. WE DECIDED NOT TO STOP IN ALDERSON BECAUSE WE FIGURED WE WOULD NOT GO ON . WE KEPT ON PADDLING ,THAT NIGHT WE STOPPED IN THE VICINITY OF TALCOTT, ALONG THE RIGHT SHORE LINE . THE CHIGGERS AND MOSQUITOES WERE AWFUL THEY WERE DRIVING US BOTH NUTS .WE DECIDED I WOULD WALK UNTIL I FOUND A STORE WHERE I WOULD BUY SOME CHEWING AND A BOX OF MATCHES , SO I STARTED OFF ON ABOUT A 4 MILE WALK ,IT WAS VERY QUIET AND VERY DARK . FINALLY, I CAME TO A LITTLE COUNTRY STORE, EXCHANGED PLEASANTRIES , BOUGHT 3 BEECHNUT CHEWING TOBACCOS ONE BOX OF MATCHES AND HEADED BACK. IT WAS A LONG SOLITARY WALK  . UPON RETURN JOHN AND I STARTED A FIRE , SET THERE AND CHEWED TOBACCO ,AND EVENTUALLY FEEL ASLEEP. THE NEXT MORNING ABOUT 5 I AWOKE , THE EMBERS WERE STILL PUTTING OUT HEAT ,IT WAS MYSTICALLY FOGGY, I HAD A CHEW GREETED JOHN ,AND SAID WE BETTER GO . WE DID AND ABOUT 11 O'CLOCK WE GOT TO BELL POINT, WE PULLED ONTO SHORE ,WALKED OVER TO DICK MOTHERS HOME, AUNT KAT, EAT OUTSIDE THE BEST EGGS AND BEACON I EVER ATE. THEN WE GOT IN DICKS PICKUP AND HE DROVE THE MOST WARN OUT BOYS YOU EVER SAW HOME.
