This photo is from the West Virginia & Regional
History Center, which they display on their
website
West Virginia History On View. The description states it's the
Gauge and Clark General Store Building on Corner
of Monroe Street and Railroad Avenue, South
Alderson, W. Va., ca. 1880. The only "true
corner" of Monroe St. and Railroad Ave., is
where the old bank building stands now. In this
picture, across the street from the front of the
building would be the railroad, which was there
since 1872. Note the water tower on the right,
behind the building. On the lower left are two
streets, one crossing the other. Also note the
sun is coming from the back of the left side and
shadows on the ground in front. I remember that
"look" since I've seen it hundreds of times.
The time of the
picture is listed around 1880. The bank building
has 1898 on the top front over the door.
Obviously the building had to be removed to make
way for the bank building. That would be a story
of it's own. The width of the building appears
to similar in size as the bank building, when
photos of each are compared. I've research
the Gauge and Clark General Store and could find
nothing except this photo.
All the
speculation I've done is just that. This picture
may not even be in Alderson. It certainly
wouldn't be the first photo that the
West Virginia & Regional History Center has
mistakenly
labeled.
Any discussion or
comments are welcome. I personally would like to
have more information. |
