The original
Aldersonian newspaper did not have a logo, but on
occasions, there were short messages on each side
of the title, as shown below. Other wise it was left blank.
In 1998, when
the Aldersonian went on the internet, I thought it would be
nice to have a logo and I selected the Indian head, in
tribute to Alderson High School' sports teams, who were
called, "Indians". I went through several until I found one
I liked.
Number one was scanned
from the Alderson Echoes book. Number 2 & 3 are the same,
one with gold braid around the seal, and one with gold leaf
around the seal. Many years ago David Shields sent me a
black & white printing of Number 4 and I kept it without
using it because it was in black & white. A few years later
my granddaughter, who is a graphic artist, colorize the
print, and number 4 was the results. Finally I had reached
what I felt was a worthy logo for the Aldersonian.

For years Native Americans have been expressing
their feelings about the use of their likeness,
symbols, and mascots for the representation of
companies, schools, colleges and especially
professional sport's teams, not only in the United
States, but also in Canada. It's seems the team that
has been the most offensive is the Washington
Redskins, which they have dropped "Redskins" upon
pressure from Native Americans and sponsors. The
Cleveland Indians baseball team has said they are
dropping their nickname, Indians. In Canada, the
Edmonton Eskimos, of the Canadian Football League,
has been asked to change their nickname. Several
years ago many high schools changed their nickname
in place of Native Americans.
As much as I liked the Aldersonian
Indian logo, and a lot of thought on the subject, I
decided to change the logo. I was very proud of that
beautiful image. The new logo is on the front page
and on about 1100 other pages on the site. There
will be about 500 pages that still have the Indian
head logo. Those will have to be changed one page at
a time. I don't know if I'll live that long.
For your information, If you
want to know more on this subject,
you can find lots of it on the internet.
