The empty lot between the Pharmacy & the Alderson VFD was purchased by the Fire Department. On this property used to sit Andy Russell’s clothing store, Norman Burdette's Store, Ellis Baker & also Sam Bennett's Barber Shop was first housed here. I can remember seeing the barber pole attached to the door frame and spinning round and round. Fascinating to a child.
Next , and last building in the block is the Alderson post office, on the corner of Railroad Avenue & Wickham St. Notice the beautiful flower & tree plantings along R.R. Ave. , this one in front of Post Office, looking out toward Alderson Alumni Park and the Memorial Bridge.
The Alderson Volunteer Fire Department was organized in 1906. Before moving here, it was located in the front of the City Hall Building.
