If you were to walk into the hallowed
halls of the Capital Building in Washington, DC and declare the name of God.
The Capital police just might drag you to the entrance of the building and
toss you out. If you walk into that same place and declare the name of
Jesus, you just might be whisked away to a little room in the bowels of the
building and be grilled for hours about what conspiracy you are hooked up
with and later be carted off to some psycho ward and be declared a loony.
I think we all can agree that within the past forty years, we as a nation,
have asked God to leave our schools, our government and in a lot of cases
our churches. We have told Him in so many words that He is no longer needed
or wanted in our day to day lives. Oh for sure, the so called believers will
put on their bib and tuckers and in some cases shine their shoes and go to a
church of their choice on Sunday, but like many other functions, once they
are out the door there is no more need for a God or Jesus until next week. I
believe like a lot of others that God, being the Gentleman that He is has
backed out and has taken his protective hand off of our country and said,
"If that is the way you want it, I will excuse Myself and leave you to your
own stumbling, bumbling way of governing your lives."
There was a time in our country when God was the most important part of our
everyday lives. He was vested into just about every function and task that
took place and in most cases it was an open and overt act to make God the
center of our existence.
I remember as a child during World War ll and the Korean war how our nation
would hold special services at different churches to pray for our country
and our troops. The would especially pray for those who had leadership over
our country. Members of our congress would speak out in public about the
need for our citizens to get behind these prayer services to ask God to
watch over our country and to keep it safe. I remember the president
himself, holding prayer breakfasts at the White House and clergy from all
faiths and backgrounds being invited to the breakfasts to give their special
prayers.
I remember going by my mother’s bedroom and seeing her on her knees beside
the bed saying her prayers for my brothers who were in both those wars.
I remember hearing Kate Smith singing God Bless America on the radio.
I remember opening every school day with the Pledge of Allegiance to our
flag and the teacher having a prayer before we started our school work. I
remember when our school teachers were also our Sunday school teachers.
I remember when the clergy in town was a part of every public activity and
was always called upon to express their opinion at those functions.
Wouldn’t it be nice if it were that way again? Wouldn’t it be nice to know
that the people who had control of our everyday life were people of
character. People who not only knew how to speak for us in ways to help us
in our secular lives, but also knew how to get in touch with God for
guidance. Wouldn’t it be nice to know that no matter how tough things got,
how crooked the politicians were or how bad we saw the direction of the
country going, we felt secure in knowing there was a higher power looking
out for our interest. No matter how tough the going got, we had a God who
had our back and would make sure that the ship of state would return upright
and back into calm waters.
Wouldn’t it be nice if, now as it was then, the congress and local
government policed its own and if they found a person of questionable
character they had them removed from their positions of authority and not
make them a celebrity.
Wouldn’t it be nice if school principals and teachers could actually be in
charge of their schools and their class rooms and what they said, was said
with authority.
Wouldn’t it be nice if the citizens of this country were actually the boss
over those people they elected into seats of authority. Where the agenda of
the day was the agenda for the best interest of the people who elected them.
Myself, I think the answer to all of our problems is very simple. We need to
simply ask God to come back. Maybe if we all asked Him and were serious
about it, maybe, just maybe He might come back and save our republic and us.
I do know this. I know that God is a God of His word and He keeps it. So if
I read His word and it says, "If my people, which are called by my name,
shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek My face, and turn from their
wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and
will heal their land." 11 Chron. 7:14.
Boy wouldn’t that be a wonderful Thanksgiving?!
So how about it? Will you call on Him? Will you ask?
