Greenbrier Historical Society is pleased to sponsor two
important historic preservation events this month. There will a
lecture on Thursday evening, July 23rd at 7:00 p.m. and a
hands-on workshop on Saturday, July 25th , from 10 to 3.
If These Old Stones Could Talk, a slide show presentation by
workshop leaders Morgan Donally Bunn and Kate Lewis Bunn, will
take place in the Fellowship Hall of Old Stone Church on July
23rd at 7:00p.m. Morgan and Kate have years of cemetery
preservation experience and connections to a number of families
buried in the Old Stone Cemetery. You are guaranteed an evening
of behind-the-stones stories, information and conversation.
Why is one gravestone entirely in Latin and what is being done
to save it? What group cleaned up the overgrown cemetery during
WWII? Just how many people are buried in Old Stone Cemetery and
how many actual stones are in it? Join us on Thursday evening to
get the answers to these questions and many more. This lecture
is free and open to all, though donations are happily accepted
to continue the on-going preservation work in Old Stone
Cemetery.
Cemetery Cleaning 101 a hands-on workshop, is being offered on
Saturday, July 25th in the Old Stone Cemetery. Join us to learn
to identify the different types of stones, record tombstone data
and the correct way to clean and care for tombstones. A $20
registration fee covers a boxed lunch, a bucket of tombstone
safe tools for cleaning and an informational handout. Please
call 304-645-3398 for more information and to sign up. Come
prepared to clean and have fun.
