The Hotel Alderson
I wish to announce to the traveling public that I have
leased the above hotel for a term of years, and that it is
my intention and desire to make it one of the best in West
Virginia. A splendid hotel will be my ambition - not an
extravagant one, but comfortable; clean and cheerful to
accommodate summer visitors, as well as the general
traveling public, during the year round a home for the
Commercial Traveler, and I hope to leave nothing undone that
will go toward making my guests comfortable. |
The hotel is supplied with Pure Spring Water and Sulphur Water will be
kept on draught. The hotel has 50 comfortably furnished rooms in the
main building, and 22 rooms in the two large cottages adjoining. It is
provided with modern improvements, heated by steam and has hot and cold
water baths upon each floor. Large porches among the entire first and
second floors. An excellent orchestra will furnish music during the
summer season. An elegant ball room will be thrown open in the evenings.
Good roads for wheeling or driving. The finest bass fishing in the world
is upon the Greenbrier River which flows right past the hotel. Fine
trout stream - The Big Clear Creek, only 22 miles from the hotel. Fine
pool at the hotel door for boating, fishing and bathing.
As a Summer Resort
Hundreds of people visit Alderson every year. They come from the North,
South, East & West. During the Summer you will meet elegant, refined
people from nearly every State in the Union.
The climate is as near perfection as possible; mornings and evenings
always cool and pleasant. No sultry nights, no mosquitoes or
objectionable insects to annoy one. Gentle breezes blow during the day,
and the nights are deliciously cool. No healthier spot exists than
Alderson. Probably no place on earth has a finer climate during the hot
summer months. Glorious and beautiful sunsets, and a climate soft, mild
and invigorating. Such is balmy Alderson upon the Greenbrier; a paradise
for the business man and his family, the traveling man and the
sportsman. Within communication and easy reach of all the cities East
and West over the C&O Railway. Telegraph and telephone connection with
every world.
Good Livery Stables at Extremely Low Rates
It
is a beautiful drive to the surrounding sulphur springs. Only 9 miles to
the Blue Sulphur Springs; 14 miles to the Salt Sulphur Springs; 26 miles
to the Red Sulphur Springs; 3-1/2 miles to the Wolf Creek Sulphur
Springs; 6 miles to the stock yard (Pence's) Sulphur Springs; and 22
miles by C&O Railway to the White Sulphur Springs-and within a few hours
ride by stage or rail to all the famous Virginia Springs.
Scenery
The mountain scenery along the Greenbrier is grand and varied. No human
eye ever beheld anything more beautiful. The mountains, valleys, rivers,
flowers and landscape effects are beyond comparison. Exquisite scenes
open out before the eye at every turn of the road, every top of the
mountains, every bend of the river.
Trout Fishing In the Mountain Streams
Is
well under way by April 1st. Then the water is clear and cold and the
trout are wide awake to all the tricks of the angler. The beds of our
streams are rocky, and thus many waterfalls and pools are formed.
Twenty-two miles from Hotel Alderson over the picturesque Blue Sulphur
Road, is Big Clear Creek, where trout are found in great numbers. They
are in size and gameness like all brook trout, usually about six inches
long, although once in a while vague tales come to us of a monster
someone had seen, or even hooked, only to lose again.
Both species of the Black Bass are found in Greenbrier River in
abundance, and extremely game, it being nothing unusual for an expert
caster to bring in a string of 60 or more, the average cast for the day,
however, being from 25 to 45, weighing from 3/4 pounds to 2-1/2 pounds,
and occasionally larger ones from 3 to 6 pounds. The latter, however, is
seldom caught upon flies. The best sport for the fly caster is during
the months of July, August, and September. September being the most
beautiful of all months upon the Greenbrier.
Early breakfast and lunch put up for the day always ready at the hotel.
Supper at any hour for the belated angler.
Alderson is located upon the C&O Railway, along the Greenbrier River, in
both Greenbrier and Monroe counties. A beautiful iron bridge spans the
river and connects the two counties -(Alderson being built upon both
sides of the river.) Is a town of about 1,200 population; about 1,500
feet above the level of the sea.
