ONCE IN LATE AUGUST, I PUT ON CLEATED FOOTBALL SHOES, COMFORTABLE HIP PADS, WOBBLE SHOULDER PADS, A TIGHT FITTING HELMET AND RAN DOWN ON OUR BELOVED FOOTBALL FIELD TO THE FAR NORTH END. COACH LINED US UP AND WE DID SOME EXERCISES, AND THEN HE SAID PUT ON YOUR HELMETS AND LETS RUN THE PASS PLAYS. THE HEAT WAS INTENSE 90,95 DEGREES. WHO REALLY KNOWS. ANYWAY WE RAN PASS PLAY AFTER PASS PLAY AND WERE NOT ALLOWED ANY REST. OVER AND OVER WE MOVED UP AND DOWN THAT FIELD. ONE FELLOW PLAYER TOLD ME THAT MANY TIMES HE WAS READY TO QUIT, HE NEVER DID, NONE OF US DID. I WAS DETERMINED TO ACHIEVE ,PRIDE, DESIRE, DETERMINATION TO MAKE SOMETHING OF MYSELF, AND THE SHAME OF NOT BEING 'MAN ENOUGH' ALL OF THIS DROVE ME TO STICK IT OUT, AND IT WAS ESPECIALLY TOUGH FOR THE ENDS, PLEASE NO TEARS. COACH'S DISCIPLINE WAS WONDERFUL, I APPRECIATE IT NOW, AT THE TIME I DEEPLY RESENTED IT. WHAT A GREAT MAN, TO MAKE PEOPLE DO WHAT IS BEST FOR THEM, EVEN THOUGH THEY DON'T LIKE IT. THAT WAS REAL LEADERSHIP. DISCIPLINE THE REAL KIND. |
