Age 83, of Woodbridge, VA
passed away on May 20, 2009 at Potomac Hospital. Jim was born March
21, 1926 in Fort Springs, WV. He served with distinction in the U.S.
Army in the European Theater during WWII, where he was a decorated
soldier. He attended West Virginia University and received his
degree from George Washington University. He retired after 27 year
careers with the D.C. Department of Corrections as a Captain and
Safeway as a store clerk. In retirement, he worked as a Prince
William County Park Ranger and a security guard. He also enjoyed
reading and cheering for the Redskins. Jim is survived by his wife
of 54 years, Kathryn; his son, James Robert Burns, Jr. Of Clifton
Park, NY; his daughter, Karen Brindle and her husband Matthew, of
Woodbridge, VA; and his daughter-in-law, Melanie Burns of
Nokesville, VA.
He was preceded in death by his
son, William Michael Burns, and his daughter-in-law, Margery
Conrad-Burns. Jim is also survived by four grandchildren; Brandy
Burns and her husband, Jason of Fletcher, NC; Christopher Burns and
his wife, Sheri of Bowling Green, VA; Ryan Burns and his fiancée
Mimi Shilatz of Gainesville, VA; and Teddy Brindle of Woodbridge,
VA. He is survived by two great-granddaughters: Audrey Burns and
Nina Burns. He is also survived by a sister, Margaret Wickline of
Ronceverte, WV; A brother Lewis "Buddy" Burns and his wife, Betty of
Oak Hill, WV; brother-in-law Ernest Wygal and his wife, June of
Canvas, WV; a special niece, Pamela Ticen and her husband Russell of
Camden, NC; many other special nieces, nephews, cousins and friends;
and beloved pet, Missi. A memorial service will not be held at this
time. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to
the American Diabetes Association. The family extends their thanks
to the physicians and staff at the ICU at Potomac Hospital for their
kindness and support during this difficult time.
