Helen Doris Phipps - Obituary

Helen Doris Phipps, 88, of Martinsville, (King's Grant Retirement Community) died, Friday, July 24, 2015, at King's Grant Health Care. She was born February 19, 1927, in Elkridge, W.Va., (Fayette Co.), to the late William M. Hopkins and Edith Maybelle Austin Hopkins. In addition to her parents; she was preceded in death by her brothers, Ira Hopkins, Cecil Hopkins, Millard Hopkins, Harry Hopkins, and George Fred Hopkins; and sisters, Elizabeth Hopkins Swyers and Nellie Hopkins Newport; and granddaughter, Emily King Holly.

Mrs. Phipps graduated from Montgomery High School, Montgomery, W.Va. She obtained her Registered Nursing degree from the Laird Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, Montgomery, W.Va.

Her professional experiences as an RN included Laird Memorial Hospital, General Hospital, Prince Georges Md., Arlington Hospital, Arlington, and Fairfax Hospital, Falls Church, from which she retired in 1982.

Mrs. Phipps was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Martinsville. She was an active member of the United Methodist Women and also served as Chairperson of her Circle. She was also a member of Women of Faith - Walking in Faith.

Mrs. Phipps was an active bridge player with two clubs and enjoyed golfing with The Beaver Hills Lassies and The Grasshoppers. She enjoyed entertaining friends and family and was known by all as a loving, kind, and caring lady. Mrs. Phipps was always ready to help anyone she could. She was an avid Washington Redskins football fan and enjoyed watching professional golf.

Surviving are her husband, Robert Eugene Phipps of the home; one daughter, Linda Phipps King; and her husband; Dr. Joseph King of Radford; and one son, Robert Eugene Phipps, Jr. and his wife, Meg Scott Phipps of Haw River, N.C.; and grandchildren, Dr. Kathryn King Cristaldi and her husband, Joseph Cristaldi, Christopher S. King, Margaret K. Phipps and Robert S. Phipps.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, July 28, 2015, at the First United Methodist Church, Martinsville, with the Rev. Keith Ritchie and Pastor Ron Mateer officiating. Burial will be private at the Hawfields Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Mebane, N.C. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral service at the First United Methodist Church.

A memorial service will be held at King's Grant Victory Service at a later time.
