 Dorothy Margaret Van Liew Hullings - Obituary

May 1, 1925 – April 9, 2016

Dorothy Margaret Van Liew Hullings, formerly of Alderson, WV passed away Saturday, April 9, 2016 at her residence at Sentara Meadowview Terrace in Clarksville, VA where she lived for the last 2 years to be closer to her daughter and family. She was 90 years old.

Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Barbara A. Owens and her husband Monty of Clarksville, VA; two grandchildren, John A. Johnson of Charlottesville, VA and Beth A. Roberson and her husband Jim of Cary, NC; three great-grandchildren, Samantha R. Berentes, John M. Roberson, and Driggs S. Johnson; her sister Grace Hughes of Redwood City, CA and two nieces, Coleen Boike of Redwood City, CA and Maureen Unsinn of Burlingame, CA. She is preceded in death by her parents Richard and Mary Van Liew and her younger brother Richard Van Liew of New Jersey.

Dorothy was born on May 1, 1925 in Brooklyn, NY and made her home in Alderson, WV in 1945 where she worked at the Alderson Federal Reformatory for Women as a switchboard operator. She worked for 30 years as a Pharmacy Technician at Smith’s Rexall Pharmacy, later known as the Alderson Pharmacy until she retired in 1990.

She was an active member of the Alderson Mother’s Club and one of the founders of St. Mary of the Greenbrier Catholic Church in Alderson, WV, where she served as a Eucharistic Minister of the church. Dorothy enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She was known for her winning smile and quick-witted come backs to her family and friends. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

A Memorial Mass will be held to honor Dorothy on Saturday, April 16, 2016 at St. Mary of the Greenbrier Catholic Church in Alderson, WV. A private Family Memorial will be held on May 1, 2016 in Clarksville, VA. In lieu of flowers the family has requested that donations be made in her memory at St. Mary of the Greenbrier Catholic Church, PO Box 441, Alderson, WV 24910.
