Lucy Mae Ballard Smith, age 93, of Alderson, W.Va., died
Sunday, July 26, 2020 at her home in Alderson, following a long illness.
Born July 8, 1927 in Airpoint, Va., she was the daughter
of the late Charles Campbell and Louella Waldron Ballard. In addition to
her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Mark Edward
"Eddie" Smith; her daughter, Tammy Smith Skaggs; four brothers, Henry
Ike "Bunt" Ballard, Campbell Straton "Strat" Ballard, John Coles
Ballard, and Patrick Whittle Ballard; five sisters, Anna Lea Mann, Nelly
Gray "Nell" Long, Lilly Belle "Lil" Page, Hazel Grace Heath, and Fanny
Lorene Ganoe; and one special niece, Evelyn Miller Eary.
Mrs. Smith worked at Alderson’s Store in Alderson, W.Va.
for many years and was a homemaker. She graduated from Peterstown High
School in Peterstown, W.Va. and was a member of the Alderson
Presbyterian Church in Alderson. Mrs. Smith was an accomplished
seamstress and artist. She especially loved children and always had
candy for any visiting her home. She baked and decorated many birthday
cakes over the years and sewed many costumes for children. Her Halloween
decorations were phenomenal. Nobody loved a good joke more than Lucy
Mae.
Survivors include her son-in-law, Ernest Lee Skaggs, Jr.
of Alderson, W.Va., with whom she made her home; three special nieces,
Mildred Grizzard of Durham, N.C., Betty Groves and her husband, Sam, of
Alderson, W.Va., and Vicky Ambler and her husband, George "Boogie", of
Fort Spring, W.Va.; and many nieces and nephews.
The family of Mrs. Smith would like to thank all of her
caregivers, Michelle Holcomb, Jo Ann Smith, Jennifer Bowden, Kathy
Longanacre, Bethany Parkin, and Lori Still, for the wonderful care that
they all provided over the last few years.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, CDC guidelines will be
observed, with mask and social distancing encouraged.
Graveside services and burial will be held on Friday,
July 31, 2020 at 3:00 p.m. at the Old Greenbrier Memorial Cemetery in
Alderson, W.Va. with the Rev. Sam Groves officiating.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
