During World War
II, Rachel moved to Baltimore, Maryland to work for The
Glen L. Martin Company (now part of Lockheed Martin). It
was in Baltimore that she met the love of her life,
Eugene “Bucky” Waters, a Johns Hopkins University
student and fellow resident of her boarding house. After
a 2 year courtship, Bucky proposed and they were married
on June 30, 1944. During the early years of their
marriage, Rachel and Bucky resided in Sparrows Point
where Bucky worked for Bethlehem Steel; Rachel worked as
a stay at home mother to their 4 children. In 1960, the
family moved to the Chatterleigh neighborhood in Towson
(1001 Concordia Drive) where they remained for 52 years.
Rachel was an active member of the Maryland Presbyterian
Church, enjoyed a garden club and participated in a
weekly bowling league; she continued bowling until the
age of 95. After her husband retired, the Waters held
routine cocktail happy hours on their patio for everyone
who wanted to come. In 2012, Rachel moved to Mercy Ridge
where she resided until her death. Known as "Mumsy" to
those closest to her, she was the beloved matriarch of
her family and will forever be missed.
Rachel is survived by her children Barbara Vash of Los
Angeles, California, David Waters of Tequesta, Florida,
Marsha Ficken of Fairfax Virginia, and Mark Waters of
Atlanta, Georgia, grandchildren Courtney Ficken, Amy
Jackson, Steven Vash, Kyle Waters, Alex Waters and
Michael Waters; great grandchildren Ozzie and Eddie
Waters, and Kinley, Easton and Harper Jackson.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date. In
lieu of flowers contributions may be sent in Mrs.
Waters' memory to: The Mercy Ridge Scholarship Fund,
2525 Pot Spring Road, Timonium, Maryland 21093, or the
Mercy Ridge Employees Appreciation Fund at the same
address. |
