Edward L. Thompson, 81, of Alderson WV;
passed away peacefully at his home on 27th of September
2021. He was born on the 14th of February 1940 to James
Ralph and Frances Evelyn Thompson.
He graduated from Alderson High School in
1958 where he had enjoyed football and basketball in his
free time. After graduation, Ed joined the US Army where he
dutifully served his country. After an Honorable Discharge,
Ed joined his two brothers, Paul and Jack and friend Bill
Eskins (among others) in Norfolk, VA where they spent a
couple of years building the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and
Tunnel. He would reminisce about times they spent walking
wood planks and the incredible work they completed hundreds
of feet in the air!
After leaving the Bay Bridge project,
Ed pursued an education leading to an electrical
certification where he began a career as an electrician
with the Federal Bureau of Prisons, FPC Alderson. He
later transitioned into a supervisory role that included
the communications department.
After 22 years, Ed retired from the FPC and continued to
work toile away as a gentleman farmer tending to his
herd in Wolf Creek. There he spent many days enjoying
time with his friends and family as he loved the land
and being outdoors. Ed was known for his kindness and
generosity and would lend a hand anytime there was a
need. As time passed, he could easily be found at the
kitchen table playing solitaire or in his lounge chair
watching ESPN.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two older
brothers—Paul and Jack Thompson, and sister—Frances
Thompson. He leaves behind his only son Chad Thompson,
sisters—Vera A. Thompson and Betty Yeager Thompson and
brother Ralph “Bud” Thompson as well as step
granddaughter and step great grandson Erica and Caleb
Carr-McMillion, several nieces and nephews as well as an
untold number of friends.
In keeping with his wishes, he will be cremated and a
Celebration of Life Memorial will be held in the spring.
