Ruth Fields Altare, age 87, of Alderson, passed
away on Tuesday, March 20, 2012 at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center,
Fairlea, following a short illness.
Born October 6, 1924 in Alderson, she was the daughter of the late
William Edgar and Lillie Lee Taylor Fields. In addition to her
parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George Richard
"Dick" Altare; two brothers, Lawrence Edgar Fields and Lonnie Mason
Fields; and two sisters, Mamie Lee Fields and Mabel Ann Smith.
Mrs. Altare was a food supervisor and correctional officer, retiring
from the Federal Bureau of Prisons, Alderson, retiring after 15 1/2
years of service. She also worked as a sales clerk at the former
Mick or Mack Store and the Peg and Peck Store in Alderson. Mrs.
Altare was a 1944 graduate of Alderson High School. She was a member
of the Old Greenbrier Baptist Church, Alderson, where she was a
member of the Friendship Sunday School Class, served on the Official
Board of the Church, was a deaconess, and served as chairperson of
the Hospitality Committee, greeting Church members and visitors
every Sunday morning for many years. She was a member of the
National Association of Retired Federal Employees and was a member
of many civic organizations and participated in numerous fundraising
drives in the community of Alderson over the years.
Survivors include a son, George Richard "Rick" Altare of
Harrisonburg, Va.; a daughter, Mary Ruth Patton and her husband,
Larry, of Organ Cave, W.Va.; a brother, Howard William Fields of
Alderson; two sisters, Rachel Virginia Rookstool of Navarre, Fla.,
and Dolly Lee Palmer of Milton, Fla.; three grandchildren, Craig
Richard Altare and his wife, Heather, of Sacramento, Calif., David
Arthur Altare of Sacramento, Calif., and Jessica Lynn Ranson and her
husband, Matt, of Charleston, W.Va.; two great-grandchildren, Parker
and Presley Ranson of Charleston, W.Va.; and numerous nieces and
nephews.
Funeral services will be Friday, March 23, 2012 at 2 p.m. at the
Lobban Funeral Home Chapel, Alderson, with the Rev. Dr. Bill Bryan
and the Rev. Roger Adams officiating. Burial will follow at the Old
Greenbrier Memorial Cemetery, Alderson.
Friends may call Thursday, March 22, 2012 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the
Lobban Funeral Home, Alderson.
Serving as pallbearers will be Bob Holliday, Rick Simms, David
Harris, Rick Parker, Mark Ballard, and Bob Lawson.
