Woody Bowers - AHS Teacher

Rick Hughes -August 20, 2012

Woody Bowers, to me was another great guy when I grew up in Alderson. He was an excellent teacher who wanted you to master the subject matter, and if possible, which it was, to apply it to your own life and existence. Woody was always available to answer questions about grades, what college might be like, and why a person should go to college.

As far as I know Woody always treated everyone with equality and fairness, and paid no attention to names, status, class, or race. Woody was always demanding, fair and totally impartial. I have always been very lucky to have him as a teacher and advisor.

He was a very colorful figure and he taught American history and presented it from a very positive viewpoint. Davey Crockett was portrayed as a hero who came from Tennessee. He died heroically fighting or Texas at the Alamo.

He described Daniel Boone as a gallant frontiersman who helped America open the westward march with great courage and character. He taught the great depression and explained its cause as a lack of purchasing power among the vast range of citizens which triggered cataclysmic fall of our economy.

Woody taught a longtime and he was a knowledgeable and colorful person who helped me a great deal. Once, in the furnace we enjoyed a chew of red man tobacco, another time Woody actually asked me if I had any chewing, I shared my beechnut chewing with him. After graduation, I never saw Woody again and I wish I would have made the effort. Until 1992 I would have offered him a rub of snuff. Really, it would have been a privilege to tell him how much he helped me and what a great person he was. After all these years I realize I kinda let Woody down by not telling him, and that after all years these I miss him.
