In the area now occupied by Camp Greenbrier the largest fair in West Virginia was held from 1884 to 1890. The Greenbrier Valley Industrial Exposition was widely attended affair during its operation, and special trains were operated from Charleston and Clifton Forge to bring in revellers on the fair days. The old Greenbrier Baptist Church building about 1910. Elder John Alderson established this as one of the churches west of the mountains when it was charted on November 25, 1781. This building was constructed in 1870 and the bell tower added after 1900. Upon the foundation of this church and its first minister was the town of Alderson laid. Photo J. W. McClung.
Johnson Memorial Methodist Church building was put under construction in 1922 and its neoclassic architecture is still an ornament to the town. The Methodist organize in Alderson in 1874 with Rev. W. L. Lynch of the Blue Sulphur in charge.
Alderson Collegiate Institute (ACI) buildings were completed in 1889 and the grade and high school opened under the aegis of the Methodist in southern West Virginia. It was a highly respected school in the 1890s and the early years of the 1900s, open to all despite its denominational support. Only the old boarding house (right) still remains. Photo J. W. McClung.
