The Day In Alderson the Bell Tolled For Me
RICHARD E HUGHES

ONCE I SOMEHOW LANDED A JOB AT SMITHS DRUGSTORE ON THE MONROE COUNTY SIDE IN THE HEART OF DOWNTOWN ALDERSON . I WOULD STACK BOXES IN THE BACK AND ALSO OCCASIONALLY WAIT ON CUSTOMERS . ONE DAY A GUY WHO I WAS JUST GETTING TO KNOW IN JUNIOR HIGH CAME IN. AT THAT TIME I WAS A REALLY GOOD NATURED VERY NAIVE 8TH GRADED, I KNEW NOTHING ABOUT SOCIETIES RULES, MORES, AND INSANITIES. THIS YOUTH NAME WAS ALLEN HIS MOTHER HELEN HAD BABY-SAT MY LITTLE SISTER. ON REFLECTION I NEVER  KNEW WHY ALLEN CAME IN,  BUT BEING THERE IN FRONT OF A POTENTIAL CUSTOMER I WITTY TOTAL IGNORANCE ASK HIM ,WOULD YOU LIKE A GLASS OF WATER.   SUDDENLY ALL HIATUS BROKE AND I SAW GENUINE FEAR IN MY THEN ACQUIESCE EYES. AS I WAS LED TO THE BACK OF THE DRUG STORE, RUBY TOLD ME NEVER NEVER OFFER ALAN A DRINK OF WATER ,IT WAS NOT ALLOWED. I THOUGHT ABOUT THAT FOR ABOUT A WEEK AND THEN NOT HAVING A DEVELOPED MIND, I STILL CAME TO THE CORRECT CONCLUSION ON MY OWN, I RETIRED FROM SMITHS DRUG STORE. IN THE GREATEST NATION GOD EVER CREATED EVERYONE MUST HAVE ECONOMIC ,POLITICAL AND PERSONAL OPPORTUNITY AS WELL AS THE PRIVILEGE  TO ASSUME RESPONSIBILITY FOR THEIR DESTINY.  BY THE WAY ALAN THE NEXT TIME I SEE YOU I AM GOING TO BUY YOU THE BEST SIRLOIN YOU HAVE EVER EATEN.
