Sign of the Times

William Ward - July 18, 2018

Chad looked up at the new sign with trepidation. He never really thought it would come to fruition. When he had pitched the idea of this new billboard he did it mostly on a lark, not believing for a second that the “powers that be:” would ever take him seriously.

Billboards had been outlawed earlier this century so getting permission to erect this new one seemed a distant dream. That it had been approved showed how important the message printed on the sign was. Chad was the "boy wonder" of advertising but even so, this type of cooperation from the officials was unprecedented. To get this permission Chad had to make some very severe personal sacrifices.

The message itself was not new, it had existed since medieval times and as Chad passed by the sign he took one last look. The road he was on was a superhighway built just for his destination. It was a wide and smooth road that made travel easy. A lot of people these days did not even think about going this way but he felt sure that there would be many more travelers along this road in the near future.

The sacrifice that he had to make was his own soul and his journey was nearing an end. As he glanced once more at the billboard he read it aloud. “Abandon hope all ye who enter here.” He said as he passed the gates of Hell and entered.
