Bricktop, The Bridge, & Alderson
The 2nd Annual "A Tribute to Bricktop" event will be held in Alderson on August 9, 6:30- 8pm on the Alderson
Memorial Bridge.
The Jazz trio, Robinson-Kenga will return to perform music from the 20's-40's era of Bricktop. Susanna Robinson will
enchant you with her ability to vocally capture the era. A must see and hear.
Ada Beatrice Queen Victoria Louise Virginia Smith was born in Alderson, WV on August 14, 1894. She would grow up
to become one of the most famous Night Club owners in Europe. She was nick-named Bricktop because of her
auburn hair and face full of freckles. As an African American, she found more freedom as a singer and dancer in
Europe; especially Paris. There Ada learned the night club business and discovered she had a real knack for hosting.
The way she measured a successful night was by how many Kings she had in the audience. Her largest count was 5.
Bricktop could count among her friends, Cole Porter, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Josephine Baker, John Steinbeck, and the
Prince of Wales.
The Alderson Women's Club is preparing and selling something special for food that evening.
So bring you appetites, dancing feet, and chairs to this free event sponsored by Alderson Main Street, the Town of
Alderson, and Greenbrier County Arts & Recreation.
