Alderson Recycling Center Expands
The Alderson Recycling Center has expanded, and wants you to pitch in! Thanks to a grant from the WV Department
of Environmental Protection, the Town of Alderson has purchased an additional three-compartment dumpster that
accepts steel and aluminum cans in one compartment, #2 plastics (e.g. milk jugs) in the second, and newspapers
and magazines in the third. The other three-compartment dumpster accepts #1 plastics only in all three
compartments, such as empty water bottles and pop bottles.
There is also a new trailer that accepts flattened cardboard. Area residents no longer have to drive to Ronceverte to
be responsible with their waste.
Bob Bennett, Director of the Recycling Center in Ronceverte, where this recycling is taken for further processing,
said, “We have limited staff to sort the recycling once it reaches us so it is very important that it already be sorted
into the proper bins. We have been very impressed with the quality of the recycling from Alderson.”
Please keep in mind that no bags are ever accepted in the bins, and never any trash. All items must be clean and
properly sorted for the system to be a success. There is new signage at the Recycling Center to help remind patrons
what can go where.
Mayor Travis Copenhaver said, “We really appreciate the work Brian DeRouen and Kevin Johnson have done to get
a grant and improve our recycling center. We also appreciate what a good job our citizens are doing in sorting their
recycling before putting it into the bins. If it is not properly sorted, then Kevin and Brian have to “dumpster dive” to
sort it out and that is not one of their favorite tasks!”
The Alderson Recycling Center is located outside the old Ashland Station along Rt. 12 in Alderson, and is run by
volunteers. All questions can be directed to aldersonrecycling@gmail.com.
