Board Member Janice Cooley Invited to Congressional Gold Medal Ceremony

The
Greenbrier
Historical
Society
(GHS)
continues
its
commitment
to
honoring
the
legacy
of
Katherine
Johnson,
the
pioneering
African
American
mathematician
whose
contributions
to
NASA
were
pivotal
during
the
Space
Race.
As
a
native
of
White
Sulphur
Springs,
West
Virginia, Johnson's achievements have been a source of pride for the Greenbrier Valley community.
In
recognition
of
Katherine
Johnson's
extraordinary
contributions,
GHS
has
dedicated
multiple
initiatives
to
celebrate
her
life
and
work.
These
include
educational
programs,
a
play,
scholarships,
exhibits,
and
collaborations
with
local
schools
to
inspire
the
next
generation
of
scientists
and
mathematicians.
The
society's
efforts
are
part
of
a
broader
mission
to
ensure
that
Johnson's
legacy,
along
with
the
contributions
of other women in science, is remembered and honored.
In
a
remarkable
acknowledgment
of
these
efforts,
one
of
GHS's
esteemed
Board
Members,
Janice
Cooley,
has
been
invited
to
attend
a
prestigious
Congressional
Gold
Medal
Ceremony.
The
ceremony,
set
to
take
place
on
Wednesday,
September
18,
2024,
at
3:00
PM
ET
in
Emancipation
Hall
at
the
United
States
Capitol,
will
honor
Katherine
Johnson,
Dr.
Christine
Darden,
Dorothy
Vaughan,
and
Mary
Jackson,
as
well
as
all
the
women
who
played
a
crucial
role
in
the
success
of
NASA
during
the
Space
Race.
This
recognition
follows
the
passage
of
the
Congressional
Gold
Medal
Act,
which
seeks
to
highlight
the
invaluable contributions of these trailblazing women.

Cooley
expressed
her
gratitude
for
the
invitation:
